MAGDEBURG — The German Federal Ministry for Democratic Harmony has deployed a fleet of mobile re-education vans across rural Saxony-Anhalt.
The emergency initiative began rolling into towns such as Stendal, Bitterfeld, and Halberstadt early Monday morning following weekend state election results that federal officials described as “democratically non-compliant.”
Equipped with loudhailers playing soothing classical music and stocked with millions of glossy activity booklets, the armored Mercedes Sprinter vans aim to retrain the state’s 43.8% populist voting bloc using simplified pictorial guides, and friendly anthropomorphic forest creatures.
At the center of the curriculum is the state’s newly unveiled mascot: Fritzi der Brandmauer-Fuchs (Fritzi the Firewall Fox). Fritzi, a jovial cartoon fox wearing a European Union beret, guides adult voters through foundational civic exercises designed to prevent deviations from the centrist consensus.
“Fritzi understands that voting can be very confusing for rural people whose brains are preoccupied with frivolous distractions like industrial energy prices, grocery bills, and immigration numbers,” explained Dr. Albrecht von Schnösel, Under-Secretary at the Ministry of the Interior. “Through simple visual cues, such as matching the happy CDU face with the mandatory pension deduction, we are restoring the electorate’s cognitive ability to make the correct pre-approved decision.”
Other activities in the booklet include a maze titled “Help the Tax Euro Find Its Way to Brussels,” and a connect-the-dots exercise that draws a picture of Chancellor Friedrich Merz sternly wagging his finger at a coal mine.
Federal sociologists monitoring the aftermath of Sunday’s Landtag election concluded that the surge in anti-establishment votes could only be explained by widespread functional illiteracy.
“We refuse to believe that any German citizen, endowed with state-regulated television, would intentionally vote for a non-sanctioned opposition movement,” Dr. von Schnösel told reporters. “It was clearly a misunderstanding. Many voters simply confused the blue box with the blue recycling bin. This coloring book will teach them that real democracy is a multiple-choice test where only one answer keeps your heating subsidies active.”
Under the program’s guidelines, attendance at the mobile enlightenment vans is strictly voluntary, although municipal councils have noted that proof of completed coloring pages will soon be required to renew driver’s licenses, or purchase bratwurst at public markets.
On the ground in the eastern village of Osterburg, reaction to the state’s pedagogical intervention was marked by confusion.
“A young man in a beige linen suit handed me a box of eight crayons and told me that if I stayed inside the lines on page 14, my municipality might get funding to fix the main sewer line,” said Hans-Dieter Krause, 58, a local heating technician who has lived in the region since the fall of the Berlin Wall. “I tried to explain that I voted for the opposition because our local hospital closed and my electricity bill quadrupled, but the facilitator just handed me a golden star sticker and whispered that ‘Fritzi believes in my growth mindset.’”
Nearby, local grandmother Gertrude Weber sat on a park bench attempting to solve a crossword puzzle where the only clue provided was “The Only Legitimate Political Outcome (10 Letters).”
“I wrote ‘DEMOCRACY’ but it didn’t fit,” Weber noted. “The van attendant came over, crossed it out with a red pen, and wrote in ‘COALITION.’ He then handed me a pamphlet explaining that if our village votes incorrectly one more time, our town hall will be converted into a centralized European wind-turbine storage depot.”
