UK Reconsiders Shamima Begum Case After Discovering She Once Liked A Post About Tea
Officials revisit the Shamima Begum case following renewed ECHR interest and a newly surfaced social media post expressing appreciation for tea.
LONDON — The UK government is reportedly reconsidering its stance on Shamima Begum’s citizenship case after investigators unearthed a 2011 Twitter “like” on a post praising a proper cup of tea.
The post in question, from the now-defunct account @BritishBrewsMatter, read simply:
“Anyone who microwaves their tea should be exiled from the kingdom. #ProperBrewOnly”
Among thousands of likes buried deep in the Twitter archives, forensic digital analysts discovered that a teenage Shamima Begum had endorsed the tweet.
“We’ve long wrestled with questions around national allegiance,” said Home Office representative Colin Greyburn. “But this… this is powerful. A pre-ISIS teenager defending British tea values? That’s the most pro-UK thing we’ve seen all year.”
The news has triggered debate across the political spectrum, with some claiming the “Tea Tweet” proves Begum still retains core British instincts, while others argue that anyone can like tea. Even terrorists.
“She may have fled to join a death cult,” said one anonymous civil servant, “but can we really ignore the fact she once implicitly endorsed the superiority of a strong black brew over a limp peppermint infusion? That’s more British than Paddington Bear and queueing combined.”
The Prime Minister’s Office is said to be reviewing the matter in earnest, with an emergency parliamentary session planned to debate whether “residual tea loyalty” constitutes grounds for the reinstatement of citizenship.
GB News host Nigel Farage reacted live on air stating, “Well… I mean, yes, tea is sacred, but I didn’t think this was how we’d win the culture war.”
In response to the viral story, the Home Office is reportedly drafting new “British Values Diagnostics” to assess repatriation cases. These will include:
Historical support for tea-based content
Demonstrable discomfort with metric measurements
Ability to locate the nearest Greggs in under 30 seconds
A visceral hatred for people who stand on the wrong side of the escalator
According to leaked drafts, applicants may also be asked to watch back-to-back episodes of Dad’s Army and accurately identify which character best represents “the soul of Albion.”
At press time, officials were also reviewing a Facebook status from 2009 in which Begum described the Queen as “peng.”
